As the receptionist at Goodwill headquarters, Caroline has a look of quiet confidence. It’s a look she’s earned overcoming enormous obstacles in her life. “I was raised a fairy tale princess,” said Caroline. “Everything was just perfect.” She had it all – family, kids and a home. And then it was all taken away when Caroline was accosted at home and shot. But as terrible as the shooting was, it was just the beginning.
Recuperating from her gunshot wounds, Caroline became addicted to painkillers. That led to a cocaine addiction, which ultimately led to two years in prison. While she was there, her mother died and Caroline lost everything. When she finally left prison behind, the question for Caroline was who would give her a chance to start anew. She found the answer at Goodwill. “For many people, Goodwill is their last chance,” says Caroline. “It’s meant a lot to me. It’s meant everything.” |
